PhD Position Scholarships Application : Optimization of Numerical Simulation Software

Scholarships Application Recently we started to develop a versatile micromagnetic code - nicknamed the "MuMax" - which can run on both GPU and CPU hardware. Because the bulk parallel GPU architecture, the program runs now about 100x faster on this hardware. However, there is room for optimization-technical computer a lot and many new features such as the development of communication schemes for multi-GPU implementation of the future.

Profile

We are Scholarships Application looking for a new PhD student with a master's degree in one of informatics / computer science, engineering, physics or mathematics. This research topic is the numerical optimization method to the GPU hardware. Although applied to micromagnetic simulations, there is no special knowledge of physics or the magnet necessary. A public interest to numerical methods is needed though.

You will join the work on topics such as numerical techniques to solve a large system of coupled differential equations, fast summation techniques, fast Fourier transformation, etc. Both the underlying algorithms and their implementation on the CPU and GPU hardware should be optimized. Another part of the software is now written in C + + / Java / Python / Go and scripting language. They can be extended by modules written in high level programming language.

The position is created within the integrated project Adaptive Modular Architecture for Rich Motor Skills (AMARSi), funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Program Cognitive Systems, Interaction, Robotics. The Scholarship Application consortium comprises ten European research groups from robotics, machine learning, computational neuroscience and behavioral neuroscience, providing a rich context for interdisciplinary research.

The AMARSi project investigates complex modular neurocontroller architectures for quadruped and humanoid robots, and strives to unite methods from robot engineering with insights from biological motor control. Scholarships Application Decision making is a central human capacity and a vital component of complex artificial systems. Decisions often need to be made when the environment is changing, where information is limited or unreliable, when time is of the essence, and in the presence of other decision makers. Despite this complexity, humans and, to a limited extent, artificial systems operate successfully in a wide range of such situations.

The Scholarships Application Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council UK (EPSRC) has awarded the University of Bristol £1.6M to establish an inter-disciplinary centre to research Decision Making in an Unstable World, which will build on current world-class research on decision making which is carried out throughout the University. Scholarships Application we will carry out experiments with human volunteers and build models to understand how decisions are made. The resulting models will then be applied to a range of real life problems.

Five fully-funded studentships, each of four years, are available for individuals who are keen to investigate and develop models of decision-making. There will also be two post-doctoral research associates appointed to the project, and all seven researchers will be located in a newly-refurbished dedicated space. Cross-disciplinary training will be provided in the first year, consisting of a personally tailored suite of taught courses and two mini-projects. The Theoretical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Medical Technology Assessment groups will collaborate within a new project on the development of methods to assess the actual added value of implementing new diagnostic tests. Clinical prediction rules aim to provide a probability of the presence of a disease (diagnosis) or occurrence of a disease (prognosis) in an individual. The development of such prediction models is becoming increasingly popular, and newly developed diagnostic tests, such as biomarkers, may lead to improved prediction models. However, the evaluation of those prediction models is typically limited to an assessment of their predictive accuracy. As a result, the effects of applying new, or updated, prediction models on actual patient outcomes remain unknown. Within the field of health economics modeling methods have been developed to assess the balance between costs and effects (patient outcomes) for medical interventions. In this project we aim to use and extend these methods for the assessment of the added value of new diagnostic tests. In addition, we aim to develop methods that are able to quantify the effects of replacing an existing prediction model that is used in clinical practice with a new, or updated, prediction model. A new model may provide different risk estimates for patients, for example for cardiovascular disease, compared with the old model.

As a result the preferred treatment option may also change for specific patient subgroups, and methods need to be developed to identify these subgroups. We will use statistical methods and simulation models as well as empirical data on the diagnosis deep vein thrombosis, the prognosis of cardiovascular outcomes, and the prognosis of traumatic brain injury. In collaboration with epidemiologists, statisticians and health economists you will investigate methods to assess diagnostic tests in general and clinical prediction rules in particular. Results will be described in scientific papers, and published in international, peer-reviewed journals. Based on the papers you will write a thesis, at the end of the project. Job description

We need four PhD students in the following fields:

Light metal alloys to reduce CO2 emission of cars (2 positions)

MgAl alloys are very promising materials for weight reduction in cars. However, atmospheric corrosion problems have to be solved in order to use materials on a larger scale. This project is performed in cooperation with industry partners e.g. Volvo Cars. The positions are within the project “Rheocast Mg alloys for weight reduction in vehicles” which is supported by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research.

Corrosion research for green power (2 positions)

Gasification of biomass and waste is increasingly used for producing renewable fuels, e.g. biodiesel. The production gas can also be burned in order to produce green electricity. In order to increase the electric efficiency of the gasification process, the corrosion resistance of materials used needs to be addressed. This project is conducted in collaboration with industry partners e.g. Sandvik, Metso Power and E.On.
Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) provide high efficiency electricity generation and do not rely on hydrogen as a fuel like most other fuel cell types. Because of the high operating temperature the metallic interconnects suffer from severe corrosion and thus limit the lifetime of the SOFC. We investigate the use of nano coatings to increase oxidation resistance, reduce chromia volatilization and improve other SOFC relevant properties. This project is conducted in collaboration with industry partners i.e. Sandvik and Topsoe Fuel Cells.

Senior Teaching Fellowships provide support for those students who have already completed a Teaching Fellowship in the department. The application for a Senior Teaching Fellowship must include evidence of teaching effectiveness in accordance with the current teaching evaluation instrument approved by the Arts and Sciences Council (SEEQ). In the final selection of Senior Teaching Fellows, the Dean considers the undergraduate teaching needs of academic departments. Normally, the Senior Teaching Fellowship would be the second of the internally administered prestigious awards for advanced doctoral students. Thus, a Senior Teaching Fellowship would be held before an Alumni Dissertation Fellowship but after a Research Assistantship.

Award Information
The stipend for a 2009/10 GSAS Senior Teaching Fellowship was $23,000. A tuition scholarship will also be provided. Responsibilities of Senior Teaching Fellows include teaching three courses per year at Fordham College under faculty supervision.

Eligibility
GSAS doctoral students in good standing with satisfactory academic progress according to the guidelines established by GSAS are eligible for this award. CO2 capture and storage (CCS) is one of the leading options for the short-term reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, the CO2 capture step accounts for 75% of the cost of the CCS chain and leads to a significant increase in energy usage. Therefore, more efficient CO2 capture technologies are required. Absorption is the most mature technology for CO2 capture today; however, this process is not yet fully understood. It is a major challenge to separate the effects of mass transfer from chemical reaction kinetics. Therefore, in this project, a Raman-spectrocopy-based set-up will be developed to investigate the equilibrium condition as well as the transient CO2 absorption process. The PhD project will focus on the development of the measurement set-up and measuring cells, as well as the experimental investigation of the absorption process. By incorporating the measurement results, thermodynamics and chemistry, further information about the diffusion process as well as the reaction kinetics should be gained. A significant part of the project is being carried out at the Chair for Technical Thermodynamics (LTT) of Prof. André Bardow (RWTH Aachen University).

The use of scientific assessment as a formalized process for evaluating knowledge for the specific purpose of informing government decision-making has expanded since the mid-1970s, but how successful have these assessments been? As part of a multi-year collaborative project between New York University, UCSD, and The Woodrow Wilson School's Science, Technology and Environmental Policy Program at Princeton University, we seek a post-doctoral fellow to examine the scientific assessments regarding acid precipitation, the epistemologies on which they have relied, and the controversies which they have engendered.

The ideal fellow will have a Ph.D. in history and philosophy of science or a closely related field, and sufficient scientific background and interest to understand the technical issues at stake in the scientific evaluations. The fellow will work under the joint supervision of Dale Jamieson (NYU), Michael Oppenheimer (Princeton), and Naomi Oreskes (UCSD).

The initial appointment will be for one year, with the expectation of renewal based on performance and available funding. The successful candidate will be based primarily at NYU. Research could begin anytime after September 1, 2010, contingent on final approval of NSF funding. Review of applications begins immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

The First Global Symposium on Health Systems Research (organized by WHO and collaborating partners), The Global Forum for Health Research and The Lancet are pleased to announce an essay competition for young researchers. The theme of this year’s competition is Health Systems Research: towards universal health coverage.

Health Systems Research (HSR) – the purposeful generation of knowledge that enables societies to organize themselves to improve health outcomes and health services – is rapidly emerging as one of the most dynamic and complex areas of research for health. The Symposium is dedicated to improving the scientific evidence needed by health policy-makers and health professionals to inform their decisions related to accelerating universal health coverage.

Young professionals working in or interested in the wide spectrum of health systems research are invited to submit essays covering one or more of the following areas of inquiry:

Political economy of universal coverage: historic analysis; social, political and economic context; policies, processes and power relationships

Health system financing: different financing mechanisms and their implications for universal health coverage and health equity

Scale-up of health services: proven technical and managerial practices to scale up access to effective interventions and services at primary, secondary or tertiary levels

Knowledge translation: translating health systems research into policy and practice

Each submitted essay should reflect the young researcher’s unique perspective on a particular aspect(s) of health systems research. It should include structured arguments and critical analysis based on original quantitative and/or qualitative research, with the intent to demonstrate impact on health and health equity. The essay should be less technical and more provocative, idealistic and inspirational. It should demonstrate the “human face” of health systems research.

Aim of the Call

The aim of the call is to identify and encourage young researchers at the early stage of their career and inspire many to action through provocative, idealistic and passionate ideas.

Eligibility

• Authors must have been born on or after 1 January 1980.
• Authors must have at least one of the following:
(i) a master’s degree in health or a health-related field;
(ii) be enrolled in a doctoral-level programme in health or a health-related field;
(iii) at least two years’ work or research experience in public health or development.

Note: Staff members of the Global Forum and The Lancet as well as Symposium partners or their immediate families are ineligible to enter the competition.

Submission Rules

• Each author may submit one essay only.
• Essays may be submitted in English or French and should not exceed 1500 words (excluding title and references).
• All submissions must be 12pt Times New Roman (single spaced) in a .doc file.
• Essays must not have been previously published.
• Essays should be individual (i.e., the work of a single author).

Evaluation

Evaluation of the essays will be conducted by members of the Symposium Scientific Committee, Editors of The Lancet and the Global Forum Programme Committee. The essays will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

• Relevance to the theme of the competition.
• Originality and quality of the essay (clarity, coherence, style and organization).
• Demonstration of the impact of the research referred to in the essay on health
and health equity.

Prizes

• A selection of shortlisted essays will be published in an anthology as well as on the Global Forum and Lancet websites. The anthology will be launched on the occasion of the First Global Symposium on Health Systems Research.
• Winners will be invited to take part (with all expenses paid) in the Symposium, which will take place in Montreux, Switzerland, from 16 to 19 November 2010.

Call Schedule

• The deadline for receipt of entries is 17 May 2010.
• A shortlist will be announced by the end of June.
• Shortlisted authors will be asked to provide a print-quality photograph of themselves along with a biosketch and to confirm original authorship, date of birth and other eligibility criteria.
• The winners will be notified during August 2010.

Graduates Will Find Education is a Lifetime Pursuit

In a recent article in Newsweek, the former Minister of Education Lamar Alexander explains why he believes the college should only be three years. A follow-up round table brought several other educational chiefs debate the pros and cons of doing things faster on the higher education sector.

As a retired professor, I am following this discussion with interest and I would like to weigh in connection with two thoughts. The first of the Advanced Placement, a system in which students follow courses for college credit in high school yet. These programs are an important component of the velocity "things", movement, and seem to be a blessing for parents who, understandably, ways and means to reduce the cost of registration.

I guess AP is working well in areas such as mathematics or computer science. As a 14-year-old can do calculations, or the development of new software, more power to them.

In the humanities, but I'm not sure that things can be, without sufficient experience of life that most young people disappeared understood.

I was 16 years old when I, Lecture 20 years old when I graduated. I have learned that they receive from me a large literature on, but then I realized how immature my reading of Shakespeare, Dickens and Eliot seems to be. When I complained that "King Lear," an old fool to want to tell your children, how she loved him, as one teacher said to me: 'You are very young. "He was right.

In short, I had a degree before I am old enough to drink in order to vote or, at least if it follows the laws of time, but I was not much of an education. Luckily I was able to higher grades, have helped bridge the gap further sought. But when our daughter was invited to a degree in elementary school because of its high reading, look at my wife and I said no. Even our daughter, or that we regret.

It's that time of year again, time to start looking for money to pay for the next school year. Financial aid comes in many forms, from the obvious choices such as loans that have to be paid back to those that do not have to be paid back such as grants and scholarships. While most students are aware of the college scholarship process, many are not aware that many schools offer guaranteed college scholarships.

The scholarships that most students think of when they think of college scholarships are those that generally require that you not only meet certain criteria, but that you also go through a lengthy application process which might include an essay, portfolio or some other competition in order to receive the scholarship. The process can be quite daunting, but worth the effort if you are able to get a significant amount of free money for college that doesn't have to be paid back. However, most students are not aware that many schools give out guaranteed college scholarships without having to file an application or compete for the scholarship.

Guaranteed college scholarships are simply that, they are guaranteed as long as you apply to the university or college, get accepted and enroll. There is no application process except including all the necessary information when you apply to the college. The criteria for receiving a guaranteed college scholarship is usually by association to a specific group, minority status or scholarship status including your GPA, SAT or ACT scores and high school standing. In many cases the guaranteed scholarships are renewable if you adhere to the criteria for renewal such as a minimum GPA. Also, even if you are eligible for more than one guaranteed scholarship at a given school, you will most likely only be given the highest amount you are eligible to receive. Check with the financial aid office of your schools of choice to see if they offer guaranteed scholarships.

In addition to applying to your colleges or universities of choice, remember to apply for financial aid even if you don't think you might be eligible for financial aid. This is generally a requirement for most schools in order to get aid of any type.

The application process for 2010 is now closed and applications are still being investigated.

Scholarship $ 14,000 ($ 3,500 per year for four years) will be presented up to three incoming freshmen majoring in chemistry. These scholarships are renewable for four years and may in other grants and the University of Tennessee lottery scholarship will be added. Big chemical scholarships are named in honor of Dr. W. Irvine Great, who served as Head of Department 1941-1964. Previous scholars have, with great distinction and the path to success in graduate school studying chemistry, medical schools, law schools in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

In order for a large chemical scholarship consideration, students must:

* Secondary, a chemistry course with an A or B
* Ensuring a high school GPA of 3.5 or more
* Do you have a composite score of 26 or higher on the ACT exam (or equivalent SA)
* Declare a large clock in the chemistry

Eligible majors are all degrees of BS and BA Chemistry (including biochemistry and pre-pre-and) dentistry. Non-majors in chemistry (chemistry, biology, nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy and pre-pre-veterinary medicine) are not eligible for the Grand Award. A chemistry major, is ideal for anyone with an interest in medicine, dentistry, forensic medicine, chemistry, patents, environmental protection, biochemistry, materials, research or other science / technology related fields.
